2 - Apply for a grant

Grant applications are reviewed by the end of the month they are received in. Applicants will normally be advised within 45 days, subject to volume of applications.

theatre works! is a charity dedicated to providing theatre and related educational experiences to children and young people (Ages 7-16) who might not normally have access to the theatre. We provide discounted theatre tickets through schools, youth groups and theatres.

To be eligible, schools need to be at least 30% Pupil Premium in the UK and 40% Free School Meals in the US.

Funds can be used to pay for transport to regional theatres. We have a limited budget for London theatre visits. Applicants will generally have a higher probability of getting their grant approved when applying for regional theatre visits.

Workshops will be considered for funding if they are related to a specific theatre production.

At a minimum the level of attendance should reflect the percent of PP students in the school e.g if you are a 30% PP school, 30% of the attendees should be PP students.

For curriculum-related plays, we only pay for Pupil Premium students in the UK and Free School Meal students in the US. Every effort should be made not to single our such students.

We require funds to be spent in a way that does not single out children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

In the UK schools and community groups within the M25 are not eligible for grants; there are several grant resources available for London based schools.

Please specify in your application what efforts you will make to ensure a wide range of disadvantaged children benefit from this programme. These may well include children who don’t meet the PP definition but who for a variety of reasons do not have access to the theatre, for example SEND children. Preference will be given to applications that suggest the school has implemented plans to reach out to a wide range of children who may not have had the opportunity to attend theatre performances.

We ask you to complete an evaluation report within two weeks of the play; the final 20% of the grant will be paid when we receive the report.
